Yeah yeah Drum Fan. You're right. When he blows it's something that is to be felt. Like Marvin Smith. I personally don't care for polished sounds. I disagree with those who can't hear it. But I guess it's their loss.
Now I found an interesting post on HASS' board about Donati. So I feel like a dung having dissed him. Hass digs him, but makes some valid points.
Ummm..Antonio Sanchez? Great soloist, and latin drums. Has anyone heard the last Pat Metheny? Ummm, where's the groove. He doesn't quite have the backbeat thing together. I miss Wertico.
I don't have the link to HASS' board. It's at stevehass.net under "DA GROOVE HOUSE"

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif"> Really...

Check out a Clip from the latest Mike Brecker CD "Wide Angles" with Antonio. The tune is titled "Night Jessamine", it's the 5th one. Click Here to access the Amazon Site then scroll down to get to the sound samples. Not so bad of a backbeat I find...

Sanchez is frightening...1 of the most musical drummers who also has loads of chops, but presents them in a very un-muscular & musical way, even when he's being, quote, "busy" [which he can be, but it kills!]...great latin/brazilian/afro/jazz AWA groove player...Metheny is the perfect vehicle for his finesse...do yourself a favor & don't miss them if they happen to swing anywhere near you...just MHO, of course

I dig Mr. Sanchez, but I don't see him as a consistant back beat drummer for my taste. Light and airy is fine, but when you lay it down, PUT IN THERE MAN! :-) even on that Brecker track..ehhhh...I would have liked to hear Tain.
Tain is back with Brecker again after being out with Branford and his own thing. Everyone always comes back to Tain. And Sanchez plays very musical within the music, but as a soloist, it's too drummish for me. To choppy without sense. I like guys who create something with their chops, not just flaunt them. I love his work with Danilo Perez.
